Converter-grade (rectifier-duty / converter-duty) transformers are built to feed the input of rectifiers, DC drives, thyristor converters and similar power-electronic loads, where the current drawn is non-sinusoidal and harmonic-rich rather than a clean sine wave.
Overview
Converter-grade (rectifier-duty / converter-duty) transformers are built to feed the input of rectifiers, DC drives, thyristor converters and similar power-electronic loads, where the current drawn is non-sinusoidal and harmonic-rich rather than a clean sine wave. That distorted loading causes extra eddy-current, stray and winding losses in an ordinary transformer, so converter-grade units are designed with a specified K-factor (per IEEE C57.110), low-loss core steel, tighter/transposed windings and extra thermal margin to run cool under harmonic load. They are frequently supplied as multi-pulse designs — with phase-shifted (e.g. delta/star) secondaries to feed 12-, 18- or 24-pulse rectifier bridges — which cancels lower-order harmonics and improves the line-side power quality. A buyer specifies a converter-grade transformer when a standard distribution transformer would overheat or fail to deliver the harmonic handling and phase-shift configuration a converter front-end needs.
