Inverter-grade (inverter-duty) transformers are designed to sit on the output of inverters and variable-frequency drives (VFDs), UPS and renewable-energy power stages, where the voltage is pulse-width-modulated (PWM) rather than a clean sine wave.
Overview
Inverter-grade (inverter-duty) transformers are designed to sit on the output of inverters and variable-frequency drives (VFDs), UPS and renewable-energy power stages, where the voltage is pulse-width-modulated (PWM) rather than a clean sine wave. PWM output has very fast voltage rise times (dv/dt often exceeding 1000 V/us) plus high-frequency and harmonic content, which over-stresses the insulation and heats a standard transformer. Inverter-grade units answer this with reinforced, high-dielectric insulation rated for impulse/spike withstand, higher thermal class (commonly Class H, 180 C), low-loss cores with thin tight laminations to limit harmonic eddy losses, and frequently an electrostatic shield between windings to block common-mode (PWM) currents and EMI. The result is a transformer that survives the dv/dt and harmonic heating of inverter sources for long service life. A buyer chooses an inverter-grade transformer when isolating, stepping or matching voltage on the output of a drive/inverter where ordinary units would suffer insulation breakdown or overheating.
