A constant-current power supply (CCPS) — also called a capacitor-charging power supply — is an IGBT-based high-voltage source designed specifically to charge capacitive loads in pulsed-power systems such as pulse-forming networks and modulators.
Overview
A constant-current power supply (CCPS) — also called a capacitor-charging power supply — is an IGBT-based high-voltage source designed specifically to charge capacitive loads in pulsed-power systems such as pulse-forming networks and modulators. Rather than holding a fixed voltage, it delivers a constant charging current, so the capacitor voltage rises linearly and predictably; once the load reaches the programmed voltage the supply switches into voltage-regulation mode and holds that level until the load is discharged. This gives fast, efficient, repeatable and precisely controllable charging to high voltage. Buyers choose a CCPS where ordinary fixed-voltage supplies are unsuitable — high-rep-rate capacitor charging that must be fast, controllable and not draw destructive inrush current.
